How Natural Gas Engines Work?
1. Fuel Delivery
In compressed natural gas (CNG) engines, gaseous natural gas is delivered from storage tanks to the engine's intake manifold. In liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines, the fuel is stored as a cryogenic liquid and converted back in to a gas before entering the engine.
2. Air mixing
The Natural gas is mixed with air in the intake manifold to create a combustion air fuel mixture.
3.Compression
In compression ignition Engines, the air fuel mixture is compressed within the cylinder. In spark ignition engines, the mixture is drawn in to the cylinder during the intake stroke.
4. Ignition
In spark ignition engines, a spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture at the correct moment in the compression stroke. In compression ignition engines, the high compression ratio causes auto ignition, similar to diesel engines.
5. Combustion
The ignited air-fuel mixture undergoes combustion, producing high pressure gases that push the piston down. generating mechanical energy.
6. Exhaust
After the power stroke, the exhaust gases are expelled from the cylinder during the Exhaust stroke.
Natural gas Engines are commonly used in applications such as city buses, garbage trucks, delivery vehicles, and some passenger cars. They are also used in stationary power generation, particularly in situations where natural gas is readily available.
